Missing Periods

If your period is late and you're sexually active, a pregnancy test is the first step. If it's negative, there are several other common reasons.

Common causes

●       Stress, from work, exams, travel, or emotional events

●       Sudden weight loss or gain, or very intense exercise

●       PCOS/PMOS

●       Thyroid disorders

●       High prolactin

●       Starting, stopping, or changing contraception

●       Breastfeeding

●       Perimenopause, or less commonly, early ovarian decline in younger women

●       Illness or certain medicines

What you can do first

Repeat the pregnancy test after a few days if your period is still absent. Keep track of your cycle dates, and note any changes in weight, stress, or medicines.

When to see a gynaecologist

●       No period for more than 3 months, or 6 weeks if you're usually regular and have no obvious reason

●       Missed periods with acne, hair growth, milk discharge from the breasts, or headaches

●       Missed periods under the age of 40 without an explanation

●       Periods that stop after being regular

FAQs

Can stress alone stop my period?Yes, but if it happens repeatedly, it's worth checking for other causes.

Will my periods come back by themselves?Often yes, once the cause settles, but a check-up tells you whether anything needs treatment.

A missed period is usually not serious, but not knowing why is stressful in itself. A simple check-up usually gives a clear answer, and most causes can be treated.
