Discharge

Featured image suggestion: A calm, neutral graphic or a woman looking relaxed. Avoid any clinical or graphic imagery.

Brown discharge is usually old blood that took longer to leave the body, which is why it turns brown. In most cases, it's harmless.

Usually normal

●       Spotting at the start or end of a period

●       Light spotting around ovulation, mid-cycle

●       Spotting when starting or changing hormonal contraception

●       Spotting very early in pregnancy, which should still be checked

When it needs attention

●       Brown discharge that is frequent or lasts many days

●       A foul smell, itching, or pain

●       Spotting after intercourse

●       Spotting between periods that keeps happening

●       Brown discharge along with irregular periods, acne, or weight changes

●       Any bleeding or brown discharge after menopause, which always needs a check

Possible causes if it persists

●       PCOS or hormonal imbalance

●       Cervical or uterine polyps

●       Infection

●       Endometriosis or adenomyosis

●       Cervical changes, which is why regular Pap smears matter

●       Perimenopause

What to do

Note when it happens in your cycle and how long it lasts. If it keeps occurring, a simple examination, ultrasound, and a Pap smear if you're due will usually find the cause.
